Emergency Spill Response Case Study: Trucking Company

Location: Chicago, IL
Client: Trucking Company
Project Name: Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether Emergency Response

Project Summary:

A tanker transporting 6,100 gallons of Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether (GME), a volatile and combustible substance, overturned on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. The tanker ruptured and split into two portions, releasing its contents, a portion of which ignited. The fire caused significant damage to surrounding structures, and the portion that did not ignite was released into a culvert and corresponding storm sewers.

SET Environmental was contracted to contain the decontamination and to perform remediation services as well SET mobilized vacuum trucks and mobile pressure-washer units to contain and stop further migration of the contaminants and to reopen the roadway. Then, they coordinated with IDOT to allow for remediation activities during low-traffic timeframes, in order to fully restore the site to IDOT standards.
